Let's start out with the Gobi Jerboa, a small rodent that lives in the grasslands of China and Mongolia. This species was discovered in 1925, only 89 years ago! The first one was a male Gobi Jerboa and was placed in the American Museum of Natural History. If they seem small in the picture, you have no idea. This species is about 2-6 inches long. That's about as big as a pen!

This weirdly proportioned animal is called the Gerenuk. It's head is quite small for its body, but its ears and eyes are really big. To top it all they have a thin neck and legs. If you look close enough you can see an interesting design on the inside of their ears. Gerenuk are herbivores, which means they do not eat meat or other animals or insects. They mostly feed on watery shoots, buds, flowers, and fruits. Since the food they eat is very watery, they don't need to drink water. This is very helpful in dry climates. They live in eastern Africa in forests. If you think about it. they're pretty similar to regular american deer that you may see often. Except Gerenuk are a little weirder looking!

Wow! This animal sure 'nose' how to stand out of the crowd. The Saiga Antelope has a relatively normal body but once you get passed the neck, its very unique. It has a large, dangle-y, and tubular nose. Its horns are also very different than most. They're very bumpy and straight. Other than looks, the Saiga has a pretty basic life. They travel in big herds in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Kalmykia. A cool thing about Saiga is that they can swim across large rivers. but they try to avoid rugged terrain, or ground. Other than that, they're a lot like gazelles or other large plain animals.
